Our Vision is to create knowledge of optimal design and optimal operation of industrial processes to define how a sustainable future of process and energy technology will look like. We undertake fundamental and applied research in complex environments and implement our findings into industrial applications. Our main expertise includes modeling, simulation and optimization of different processes as well as experimental investigations from microscale to mini-plant. Our research projects usually belong to at least two of the following research areas:

Destillative processes have a significant position among thermal separation processes. We are dealing with the question of how to intensify or substitute these processes by more sustainable approaches. Beside destillation we focus on membrane processes and explore the efficient combination between these two methods. Furthermore, we systematically develop reactive separation processes and membrane reactors.

The target of this research area is to develop and applicate methods for mathematical optimization for the operation and the design of processes. herefore, we take uncertainties in parameters and uncertainties in models into account. Our work also includes the optimal design and the formulation of the corresponding methods.

Model Development is essential for the development of optimal design and efficient operation of processes. The central point of this research focus is to systematically and efficiently develop stationary and dynamic models. Fundamental objectives in model formulation, numeric solutions and documentations are treated. Our self-developed modeling environment MOSAICmodeling is specifically designed and used for this purpose.

Transport Phenomena [14]

The accuracy of process models depends on an detailed description of transport processes and parameters. We conduct systematic investigations on heat and mass transfer in terms of liquid flows occurring in structured packing columns and rolling spheres on smooth surfaces occurring in fluidized beds. Therefore, we use experimental methods like µPIV and LIF and execute CFD and DNS-simulations. Our aim is to identify and describe those mechanisms and implement them into process models.
